Lourdes Central School, Mangaluru, observes Martyrs’ Day
Mangaluru: Martyrs’ Day, also known as Shaheed Diwas, is observed in India on January 30 annually. The day is dedicated to paying homage to the courageous soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their motherland. In this regard, the occasion was celebrated at Lourdes Central School, and it was marked by the conduct of a special assembly by the students of the school.
The programme commenced as MC Erica Fernandes of Class 8 led the audience in a contemplative mood by reciting the universal prayer, followed by a prayer song and intentions, whose importance was peace and harmony in our country, and remembering all the sacrifices of the soldiers.
Thought for the day by Prathista of Class 4 provided a reflective interlude, drawing inspiration from Mahatma, who said that “Freedom is the ability to think and act independently. This includes the freedom to take risks, make errors, and learn from those experiences.
The significance of the day was expounded by Samarth of Class 7 upon the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. This day serves as a solemn reminder of his unwavering commitment to truth, non-violence, and freedom. We honour the countless martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the cause of our nation’s independence, reminding ourselves of the values they cherished and the legacy they left behind.
Patriotic songs hold a significant place in fostering national identity and unity. They are powerful tools that evoke emotions, inspire action, and shape the narrative of a nation. Nathan Figueira of Class 5D sang a melodious song highlighting the qualities of martyrs such as freedom, truth, and faith in himself and God.
Patriotic skits, like their other musical counterparts, play a significant role in fostering national pride and understanding, particularly among young minds. The students of Class 6 presented a beautiful skit that emphasized the duty and responsibility of the entire nation to fight for one’s own country.
The event culminated with an address by Principal Rev. Fr. Robert D’Souza, who commenced his speech with a quote from M.K. Gandhi on sacrifice: “A non-violent soldier of freedom will covet nothing for himself; he fights only for the freedom of his country.” The Principal emphasized the paramount significance of the sacrifice, commitment, and goodwill of the martyrs for the country.
The programme was compered by Erica Fernandes of class 8C under the guidance of Ma’am Neetha and Ma’am Reshma.
