SJEC celebrates National Science Day 2024 with school students from DK and Udupi.

Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) AICTE IDEA Lab, in association with the Department of Chemistry, observed National Science Day 2024 at SJEC on Wednesday, February 28, in the Kalam Auditorium to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman in 1928, which led to his Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The programme was conducted for the school students of Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi district. The event started with a video presentation about SJEC, followed by the invocation and lamping of the light to officially inaugurate the Science Day event.

Ms Vedavathi Rao, Nodal Officer, Atal Tinkering Lab, said, “We are now a lot more dependent on science, and there is a need to create awareness among students about the contribution of our scientists.” Mr. Karthik Attavar, CEO, Section Infin-8, said, “Science is all about asking the right questions and seeking answers. Be curious to make discoveries that turn out to be innovations, leading the country to create wonders through science.”

Dr Rio D’Souza, Principal, SJEC, addressed the gathering and said, “There are many scientific discoveries in this world. Students need to have the courage to ask the questions that lead to answers, thereby building knowledge. I urge students to keep on trying and striving hard till they succeed.” Rev. Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director, SJEC, said in his presidential address, “Science has become a very important element of our lives. Let science be the way of life to ignite the passion within us. Opportunities will create innovation.”

Rev.Fr. Kenneth Rayner Crasta, Assistant Director, SJEC, Dr K. Jyothi, HOD, Chemistry Department, HR Manager, Rakesh Lobo, and Deans & Heads of various departments were present on the occasion.

As many as 28 teams with 250 students and 35 teachers across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are taking part in the National Science Day programme. For the day, a number of events are scheduled, including a project exhibition, technical events, a visit to the SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab and other state-of-the-art facilities on the campus, a keynote address by the chief guest, etc. The event is aimed at promoting scientific temper and creating awareness about the importance of science and technology among school students.

Dr Vijay V. S. welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guests. Co-convenor Ms Sheethal Fernandes rendered the vote of thanks, and Ms Olivia Sequeira compered the event.
