Mangaluru: On August 9, 2023, the students of class 10 at St. Agnes High School were taken on a field trip as a part of a service learning project. The students visited the agricultural field of Mr.Walter Saldanha at Merlapadav. It provided exposure to the natural setting of the village.
Mr.Walter Saldanha, an experienced as well as progressive farmer, demonstrated the rain and kitchen grey water harvesting. and the rice mill for stoneless rice. The old farm equipment, handheld implements, and traditional wooden kitchen accessories were a delight to watch. The students raised questions about fertilisers used, the benefits of farming, and even the problems faced by the farmers. Mr.Walter Saldanha cleared all their doubts patiently. He even explained planting techniques, crop rotation, and the importance of soil fertility for successful farming.
The students observed different vegetables grown on the farm. They enthusiastically transplanted paddy in the field, which was an unforgettable experience. The field trip provided the students with valuable practical knowledge and a deeper understanding of paddy cultivation.
The visit brought home the message of love and hospitality experienced in the rural household. Teachers Dimple Quadros, Preethi Vas, and Tr.Suneetha M. took the initiative to arrange the field trip.
