Valedictory Ceremony of the 6th edition of St Aloysius Pre-University Model United Nations (SAPMUN) 2024
Mangaluru: The valedictory ceremony of St Aloysius Pre-University Model United Nations (SAPMUN) was held on 15 September 2024. The event was a resounding success, with 420 delegates from 23 institutions participating in stimulating discussions and debates on pressing global issues like the ethical ramifications of emerging technologies and advanced weaponry in modern warfare, the destabilizing impact of non-state terrorist groups on global stability through strategic interventions, the sustainable development goals in structuring post-pandemic recovery frameworks, and so on. These discussions took place within committees like the UNSC, CCC, DISEC, and Lok Sabha. The three-day event demonstrated the college’s commitment to fostering critical thinking, diplomacy, and leadership skills among students and showcased the exceptional talent and enthusiasm of our youth.
The valedictory ceremony commenced with a solemn prayer. The president of SAPMUN 2024, Ms Shrika Manoj, welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest, Ms Giselle Mehta, Former IRS Officer, writer, and Entrepreneur. Ms Giselle Mehta congratulated the college and the SAPMUN team for the successful conduct of an interesting intellectual event. She opined that whenever war happens, it is a terrible calamity for people in the war zone, completely affecting their lives, exposing them to hunger, homelessness, injury, disease, geographical displacement, and violent deaths. She stated that the tragedy of wars, unlike natural calamities, is a conscious choice of human aggression. She explained how wars disrupt the lives of common people in the form of hikes in fuel prices, disruptions in food supply, and generic commodity crises. However, she felt that beyond all, there is a much greater cost the wars inflict on the whole planet in the form of global warming, pollution of oceans, and climate change.
Ms Mehta stated that the UN has done reasonably well as a peacemaker in various volatile spots and performed various welfare measures for developing countries to find their feet in the post-colonial world, but it has not reached its full potential as a peacemaker. However, she appreciated that the UN has inspired the young people to come forward and debate about the world issues. She commended the delegates for their intelligent immersion in world affairs and international relations. She hoped that their deliberations in events like SAPMUN would open new opportunities for careers in governments and decision-making.
Rev. Fr Clifford Sequeira SJ, Principal of St. Aloysius PU College, presided over the ceremony. Vice Principals, Ms Vilma Fernandes and Mr Muralikrishna GM, and Deans, Dr Pradeep M. and Ms Kiran Shetty, graced the occasion. The Secretary General of SAPMUN 2024, Krish Chowta, addressed the audience and highlighted the opportunity given to delegates to raise their voices on a platform like SAPMUN, where their perspectives can influence global conversations. He urged the delegates to be the voice of those who are silenced by oppression, marginalized by society, and forgotten by history. Krish then officially concluded the 6th edition of SAPMUN with the striking of the gavel.

The winners were felicitated with mementos, certificates, and cash prizes. The chairpersons and secretariat members were also commended and complimented with certificates and souvenirs. The vote of thanks was proposed by Vice President of SAPMUN, Aisha Hanina, and the valedictory programme was compeered by Jane Venitia Valerian Moras. The staff incharges, Mr Arun Dsouza, Department of Computer Science, Ms Sabina Manjunatha, Department of English, and Ms. Maneesha, Department of Arts, guided the student convenors in organising this mega event meticulously and making this programme successful and memorable.
