St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur Hosts Inter-College Women’s Cricket Tournament: Brahmavar SMS College Clinches Title

Puttur, 9 April 2025: St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, in collaboration with Mangalore University, Mangala Gangotri, successfully organized the Inter-College Women’s Cricket (Leather Ball) Overarm Tournament at the college grounds. The tournament concluded on Monday and witnessed enthusiastic participation from colleges across the region.

After a series of competitive and high-spirited matches, Brahmavar SMS College emerged as the champions, displaying remarkable consistency and teamwork. Alva’s College, Moodbidri, put up a commendable performance and secured the runner-up position, earning appreciation for their skill and determination on the field.

Individual excellence was also recognized during the tournament. Swarna Gowri of Brahmavar SMS College was adjudged the Best Bowler for her consistent and incisive spells. Dhanushree of Alva’s College was awarded Best Batsman for her solid performances throughout the tournament, while Lakshmi of Brahmavar SMS College was named Best All-Rounder for her valuable contributions with both bat and ball.

The valedictory ceremony, held in the evening, was graced by Dr Gerald Santosh D’Souza, Director of the Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University. Addressing the gathering after distributing prizes, he remarked, “Cricket is not only a glamorous sport but also a mind game. Technical skill, timing, physical ability, and relentless practice are crucial. Knowing how to win is as important as playing well.”

Dr Vijaya Kumar Moleyar, Vice Principal of St Philomena Autonomous College, also spoke on the occasion. Reflecting on the ongoing IPL tournament, he said, “Commitment is the key to success in cricket. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar are living proof that hard work and dedication lead to greatness.”

Also present on the dais were Dr Prasanna from the Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University, and Dr Podiya, who served as the tournament observer. Elias Pinto, Director of Physical Education at St Philomena Autonomous College, welcomed the gathering and announced the winners, while Rajesh Mulya, Director of Physical Education at St Philomena PU College, assisted in the smooth conduct of the tournament.

The tournament was a vibrant showcase of talent, team spirit, and sportsmanship, reflecting the growing enthusiasm and rising standards of women’s cricket at the collegiate level.
