St Philomena College (Autonomous) Explores the Mathematical Essence of AI through Expert Talk
Puttur, 23 April 2025: The Department of Mathematics (UG & PG) at St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, organized an intellectually enriching session titled “From Algebra to Intelligence: The Mathematical Heart of AI”, aimed at unraveling the profound role of mathematics in the field of artificial intelligence.
The session was presided over by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the College, who emphasized the growing significance of AI in both academia and industry. While acknowledging the rise of applied sciences, he reiterated that a solid foundation in mathematics is vital for anyone aspiring to excel in AI-related domains.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr Ramananda H. S., Professor, Department of Mathematics, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore. In his thought-provoking talk, he remarked, “Even though the elephant is in our home, we are not able to see it,” highlighting the omnipresence of AI in our daily lives. His engaging presentation shed light on the often-overlooked ways AI influences our routines and encouraged students to appreciate its mathematical underpinnings.






The event also witnessed the official release of the postgraduate Mathematics programme brochure, unveiled by the Principal. Prof. Ganesh Bhat K., Co-ordinator of PG Mathematics, presented an overview of alumni achievements, showcasing their academic and professional accomplishments. On the occasion, Navyashree, a student of II MSc Mathematics, was felicitated by the Principal for clearing the Karnataka State Eligibility Test (KSET).
The programme commenced with a prayer by Manasa and team from I BSc. Ms Thanuja N. P., Head of the Department of Mathematics, welcomed the gathering. Ms Pratheeksha, Assistant Professor, PG Mathematics, proposed the vote of thanks. The event was compered by Neha of II MSc Mathematics.
The event was also graced by Ms Rakshitha K. Shetty, Ms Deepika, Ms Anju Joseph, and Mrs Varija, Assistant Professor from the Department of Computer Science, along with an enthusiastic audience of undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics students.
