St Joseph Engineering College organized Fire Fighting Training Program
Mangaluru: The Department of Human Resource, St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), in association with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, proudly organised the Fire Fighting Training Program on campus for SJEC teaching and non-teaching staff at Fr Fred Memorial Hall, Academic Block I, on July 20, 2024, and August 3, 2024, in two batches. The event commenced at 9:30 AM with an inauguration ceremony, followed by a series of training sessions.
Mr. Mahmed Zulfikar Nawaz K.P., the District Fire Officer (Fire Prevention) from Karnataka State Fire & Emergency Services, Mangalore, Chief Guest of the program, explained in his session, through his rich expertise, the importance of firefighting training to individuals, which can save the lives of people around them as well as the damage to property where they reside or work. In his presentation, he showcased the major tragic fire accidents in different cities that caused huge losses in human lives and property because of a lack of knowledge about handling fire accidents.
Dr. John E. D’Silva, the Chief Administrative Officer of SJEC, graced the occasion as the Guest of Honour and shared his experience about the need for this training. The program was coordinated by Dr. Shreeranga Bhat, HOD, Department of Mechanical Engineering. Welcomed the gathering, and Mr. Rakesh T. Lobo, HR Manager, SJEC, addressed the gathering and explained the importance of this training. The training program featured a comprehensive schedule designed to equip participants with essential firefighting skills, which included a theoretical session on understanding various classes of fire, the fire triangle, different types of fire extinguishers, and modes of evacuation. The session ended with a demonstration of extinguishing fire using different fire extinguishers.
The training sessions were delivered by Mr. Praveen, Fire Officer, Pandeshwar, and Mr. Venkatesh, Fire Officer, Belthangady, who shared their expertise in handling the fire in different ways using various resources available at the location of the fire accident in case of emergencies. The session witnessed the participation of 150 registered staff members to become certified fire fighters.
The training aimed to enhance the fire safety knowledge and preparedness of the participants, contributing significantly to campus safety and emergency readiness. The event was a testament to SJEC’s commitment to fostering a safe and well-prepared community. Mr. Rajesh Belchada, convener of the program, delivered the vote of thanks.
