St Agnes to launch centenary celebrations

Mangaluru, Dec. 28: St Agnes College is all set to launch its centenary year on January 3 with a variety of programmes through the year.

The celebrations start at 9:30 a.m., with the inauguration of Mother Mary Aloysia Centenary Memorial Block by Rev. Sr M. Susheela, the Superior General of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation and blessing by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore. This will be followed by a Thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration.

The evening Inaugural Ceremony will be held at the Degree College Open Air Stage, at 5 p.m. Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore will preside and Rev. Sr M. Susheela and Rev. Sr M. Shamitha, Superior General & Provincial Superior of the AC Congregation will ianuagurate. Ms Meera Rao, Director, Rambus Inc., USA will be the Chief Guest. Prof P S Yadapadithaya, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University and Mr. Anirudh Shravan, IAS, Commissioner, Collegiate Education will be the Special Guests.

VIPs including Nalin Kumar Kateel; U T Khader; D. Vedavyas Kamath; Ivan D’Souza; J R Lobo; Sindhu B Rupesh IAS; Dr P. S. Harsha IPS; Michael D’Souza, MD, Ivory Grand Real Estate, UAE; Dr Brian Pinto, Former Senior Adviser, The World Bank Consultant-African Development Bank; Shabana and Mr Faizal, Chairpersons, KEF Holdings; Mr Leslie J Fernandes, Ex-Chairman, Dockendale Shipping Co Ltd. Australia and Ronald Pinto, MD, Hyssna International, UAE have consented to be the guests of honour.

Earlier, the Centenary Celebrations had a Curtain Raiser in the form of Centenary Run on the 15 December 2019. Five more major activities and 100 other activities involving all stakeholders and the public have been planned for the Centenary Year.

Knowledge Factory

“Knowledge Factory” is the first of the many programme that St. Agnes College as a part of its celebration. It is a day-long programme, from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., to be held on 10th January 2020. The Promise Foundation and the NIITI Consulting, Delhi, are collaborating to put up this programme that has been held in the past years in the metropolitan cities.

The speakers of the day are internationally renowned, from all walks of life, i.e., from the film industry we have Lisa Rani Ray, Indian Canadian Actor, Author, Philanthropist and Social Activist; Sunil Butch, Director, Live Nation; ex CEO, Zee Entertainment; Deepanitha Sharma, actor, supermodel and entrepreneur; Kriti Tula, Co-Founder and Creative Director, Doodlage Nandini Srikar, singer and composer; and Prakash Belavadi, movie and theatre actor, who along with Vasanthii Hariprakash, Radio TV Journalist and Founder, Pickle Jar, would speak on maverick intellectual and renaissance man, the late Girish Karnad.

The second category is of the women who dared to venture into successful innovative enterprises like Swathi Pande, Co-Founder and CEO, Arboreal; Anuradha Kedia, Co-Founder, The Better India; and Gaurava Yadav, Founder & CEO, EduAce Services and a well known quiz master too. From the sports arena we have the beautiful sportswoman Heena Sidhu, who is the world number 1 pistol shooter. The programme will be anchored by celebrity news presenter Rini Simon Khanna.

This programme hopes to serve as motivation from persons who shine today in spite of all the odds faced by them. In addition, there will be a quiz on History by the renowned quiz master Gaurava Yaday. Quite a few have shown interest in participating in the same. The winner will be awarded cash prize of Rs.30,000 and the runner up Rs.20,000. Two make a team, without restrictions of age or category.

There will be two types of passes for the programme: Rs.200 for students and Rs.500 for others. An opportunity for the participants with Rs. 500 pass, to dine and interact with the celebrities will be another attraction of the day. There will also be a lucky draw on each category of passes with electronic gadgets worth Rs.25,000 each as prizes.

Other events

There are several other events to be held during the course of the Centenary Year.
The Trade Fair will encourage and empower women entrepreneurs by offering them a platform to exhibit their ingenuity and to network with their counterparts from different fields.

The Institution’s Social Responsibility Project will comprise hands-on experience, skill building and awareness programmes in the five adopted villages: Kuttar, Amblamogaru, Munnur, Harekala, Hosabettu.

A National Level Sports Event for students from women’s universities will be held in order to give a special thrust to the concept of physical well-being.

Agnotsav will bring together 100 women achievers from ten different walks of life who will be honoured by the college.

St. Agnes College, founded by Mother Mary Aloysia, the Second Superior General of the Apostolic Carmel Congregation, is a premier institution that has been empowering women through education since 1920-21. The college is the first women’s college on the West Coast of India and the first under private management, in the whole country.
