Skin Camp organised at Northern Sky Excelsa, Kadri, Mangaluru

Mangaluru: The Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy, FMMC, in association with CREDAI Women’s Wing and CREDAI Mangaluru, organized a skin camp on the occasion of World Skin Health Day on July 8, 2024, at Northern Sky Excelsa, Kadri, Mangalore.

The community-based research project headed by Dr. Rochelle Monteiro, “Closing the Cycle of Marginalization: Migrant Workers and Neglected Tropical Disorders of Skin (NTDs) in South India,” was awarded the DERMLINK 2023 Research Grant (International) under the  International Foundation for Dermatology through the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS).  Only one project per country is selected for this prestigious grant among a multitude of applicants. Under the purview of this grant, the skin camp was conducted for migrant construction workers. 

The programme started with a brief inaugural function and the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries. Dr. Ramesh Bhat M., Professor of Dermatology and Head of Research at FMRC, welcomed the gathering.  Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator of FMMCH, addressed the gathering and spoke about the need to identify and treat skin disorders. He also informed the audience about the benefits Father Muller Charitable Institutions is offering them. FMCI will be providing free health cards to all the construction workers to avail themselves of health benefits in the future.

Mr. Vinod Pinto, President of CREDAI, addressed the gathering and requested that they avail themselves of the health benefits offered by the camp. Dr Anil Shetty, Professor of Pediatrics at FMMC, spoke during the occasion. Mrs. Kritheen Ameen, CREDAI Women’s Wing Coordinator, Mrs Rajni Patrao, and Mr Arjun Rao, CEO of CREDAI, graced the occasion. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Rochelle Monteiro, Professor of Dermatology and organizer of the camp. Refreshments were served to all the attendees.

A total of 150 workers attended the camp, and 80 workers were screened and treated for skin disorders. Free medicines were provided to all. The workers were also provided with health information on skin disorders and were provided with a “ChatBot” (DERMA_CHAT_BOT) to address their skin concerns in the future. Postgraduates and interns from the Department of Dermatology attended the camp.
