SJEC Hosts “Consumer Awareness Program” in Association with TRAI

Mangaluru: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Regional Office Bengaluru, in association with St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor, Mangaluru, organized a Consumer Awareness Program on 15-05-2025. The program featured expert sessions on “Telecom Rights & Privileges” and “Cybercrime/Cybertheft” aimed at benefiting students and faculty members. The main objective was to safeguard consumer interests and raise awareness. TRAI conducts such Consumer Outreach Programmes across the country to fulfill this mission.

The event commenced at 11:00 AM at the Kalam Auditorium, AB-II. Shri Brajendra Kumar, Regional Head and Advisor, TRAI Regional Office, Bengaluru, was the Chief Guest. In his insightful talk on “Telecom Rights and Privileges,” he highlighted the legal and regulatory entitlements of telecommunication service providers, emphasizing the importance of balancing network expansion with the rights of public and private property owners. He also elaborated on how governments and regulators work to protect consumer interests while fostering fair competition among telecom operators. Additionally, he provided valuable information about the benefits of the “TRAI DND 3.0” app.

Dr. Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, graced the occasion and, in his address, emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in protecting sensitive data, personal information, and critical infrastructure from unauthorized access, theft, or damage. He underlined how robust cybersecurity measures are essential for individuals, businesses, and governments in today’s increasingly digital world.

Shri Maruthi, Inspector of Police, Cybercrime Police Station, Mangaluru, delivered a session on “Cybercrime/Cybertheft.” He offered valuable insights into the various forms of cybercrime and the precautions consumers should take to stay safe in the digital age.

Shri K. Muralidhara, Senior Research Officer, TRAI Bengaluru, welcomed the gathering, and Shri K. V. Shivaprasad, Senior Research Officer, TRAI Bengaluru, was also present for the event.

The event was coordinated by Mr. Sunith Kumar T, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Applications. Ms. Nishmitha J compered the event. A total of 320 participants registered and attended the program.
