SJEC Celebrates National Science Day 2025 with Exciting Events for School Students
Mangaluru: St. Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru is proud to celebrate National Science Day, observed every year on February 28, to honour the remarkable discovery of the Raman Effect by the legendary Indian physicist, Sir C. V. Raman. This groundbreaking discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 and has had a profound impact on the field of science. At SJEC, this year’s celebration is dedicated to promoting awareness of science and technical education, encouraging students to showcase their ideas, and fostering curiosity among young minds about the application of science and technology in solving real-world problems.
The SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab, in collaboration with the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, has organized a series of exciting events for school students from the Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasaragod districts. These events are designed to bring National Science Day to life and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. More than 18 schools, with over 183 students and 21 faculty members accompanying them, participated in the National Science Day event, where various competitions and a project exhibition will be held throughout the day.









Dr. Rajesh K., Convener of the program and Associate Professor, Department of Physics, welcomed the gathering, followed by lighting the lamp, symbolizing reverence for knowledge. The Guest of Honour, Dr. Triveni K, Senior Lecturer at DIET Dakshina Kannada, delivered an inspiring speech in which she emphasized that science is not just research but a way of life. She urged everyone to learn from our ancestors in order to live in harmony and peace, love one another, and lead a stress-free life. Dr. Triveni encouraged young minds to build curiosity and explore science with a sense of wonder and passion.
Dr. Rio D’Souza, Principal of SJEC, shared his thoughts on Sir C. V. Raman’s legacy, stating that we should all learn from his curiosity and passion for discovering the world around him. Dr. Rio highlighted how Sir C. V. Raman’s constant questioning and his relentless pursuit of knowledge led to his monumental discoveries. He encouraged students to ask “Why?” and to nurture their curiosity in every aspect of life.
The event also featured a special address by the chief guest, Dr. Shruthi Acharya, Co-founder of Eikona X Innovative Solutions Pvt. Ltd., and Associate Professor at the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE). Dr. Acharya appreciated the college for organizing such an event, which fosters practicality and curiosity in science. She applauded the efforts of SJEC in building the ability among school students to contribute to society at a young age by instilling a sense of scientific inquiry and problem-solving.
The inaugural ceremony concluded with a presidential address from Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza, Director of SJEC. He encouraged everyone to excel in scientific knowledge and curiosity while also leading a fulfilling life. Rev. Fr. Wilfred Prakash D’Souza stressed the importance of love, mutual respect, and maintaining a harmonious relationship with both nature and humanity. Mrs. Ramya M. compered the program, and Ms. Madhavi Gatty, co-convener Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, delivered the vote of thanks.
