Mount Carmel Central School Observes World Environment Day with Inspiring Celebrations

Mangaluru, June 10, 2025: Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru, marked World Environment Day with a vibrant and thought-provoking celebration held in the school auditorium. Centered on the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, the programme was hosted by students of Grades X A, B, E, and Grade XII, and was compered with grace and confidence by Samuel D’Souza and Anissa Valdar.

The event began with a solemn interfaith prayer service, invoking gratitude to the Almighty for the Earth and all living beings. An elegant welcome dance followed, setting a reverent and joyful tone for the morning. Tejas Chandra extended a warm welcome to the gathering and introduced the chief guest, Madam Prashamsa Bhandary, a committed wildlife biologist and environmentalist.

Karen Lobo, Nawal Poojari, and Tulasi eloquently highlighted the significance of World Environment Day and paid tribute to renowned global environmentalists whose unwavering dedication continues to inspire change.

The cultural performances brought environmental themes to life. A powerful mime titled “Beat Overall Pollution” portrayed the devastating impact of human negligence on nature. This was followed by a soulful musical piece advocating the elimination of single-use plastics and a thematic dance emphasizing the urgent need to protect forests, wildlife, and water bodies—key pillars of ecological balance.

A special highlight of the event was the felicitation of exceptional achievers in sports and academics.

  • Jesnia Correa, a skating champion, was honoured for winning a gold medal in the 500m and a silver in the 100m at the School Games Federation of India in Delhi, along with three gold medals (500m, 1000m, and Road 1 Lap) at the 8th Ranking National Championship in Cochin, Kerala.
  • In academics, Jaelyn Venicia Pinto of Grade IX was awarded for securing International Rank 1 in the Silver Zone International Social Studies Olympiad (2024–2025), with a perfect score of 100/100, earning a cash prize of ₹3,500/-.
  • Lavanya Pramod Kumar of Grade V was also honoured for achieving State Rank 3 in the same Olympiad—an outstanding academic feat.

In her keynote address, Madam Prashamsa Bhandary encouraged students to cultivate empathy not only for fellow humans but also for animals and nature. She emphasized that environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility, and that meaningful change begins with individual choices.

Principal Sr Melissa, in her message, expressed deep appreciation for the chief guest’s commitment to wildlife conservation, calling it a true inspiration for the younger generation. She urged students to adopt sustainable habits, reduce plastic use, and actively contribute to cleaner surroundings.

The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Manav Menon and Angel Fernandes, who acknowledged the efforts of everyone who made the programme a success.

Blending cultural expression with environmental awareness, the event left students with a renewed sense of purpose in caring for the Earth.
