Mangaluru: Sparsha – Campaign against Cancer, an awareness talk was held at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, for high school students on January 6. 


Mr Padmanab, Headmaster welcomed the students and the organizers of the program. 

Awareness session was taken over by Dr.Apoorva – A.J College of Dental Science Mangaluru. In her talk she mentioned the various types of Cancer, and its causes. The main focus of the talk was on oral cancer and effects of tobacco on health. She spoke on how Cancer can spread to mouth and teeth. She stated that tobacco increases heart rate and blood pressure. Due to consumption of tobacco more than 10 lakh people die every year. 


Videos on Cancer were also shown to the students. Demonstration on hand wash was shown by Dr Pramatha. She explained the procedure of hand wash to be followed every day, and told the students that whenever we wash our hands we must wash for at least 40-60 seconds, in order to maintain hygiene. 


Ms Shilpa and Ms Kavitha showed the charts on Cancer and explained about the fruits which are useful to fight Cancer. Students were advised to avoid junk food and beat Cancer through healthy lifestyle. 


Students were very attentive throughout the sessions and actively interacted with the Doctor by asking questions. The sessions concluded by conveying an important message to the students by saying “Choose Life Not Tobacco”. 


Total number of students attended were 75. Program came to an end at 4.00 pm by singing the National Anthem.
