May 10, 2025

Mangaluru: The valedictory ceremony of Nurses Week, celebrating International Nurses Day 2025 (May 12), was held with great enthusiasm and reverence at Father Muller Medical College Hospital on May 10, 2025. This year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future – Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies,” served as a powerful reminder of the indispensable contributions made by nurses in shaping healthcare and building resilient communities.

The day began at 7:30 a.m. with a solemn thanksgiving Mass at St Joseph Chapel, celebrated by Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho. In his sermon, he reflected on the essence of true belief and trust as conveyed in the Gospel reading. He emphasized that nurses are called to be a balm to suffering humanity, often earning the trust of patients even before the treating doctors do.

The valedictory programme commenced at 11:00 a.m. with a prayer song invoking divine blessings. The dignitaries were warmly welcomed and escorted to the dais. The event was graced by Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director, Father Muller Charitable Institutions; Dr. Lulu Sheriff, Chief Guest of the day; Rev. Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, Administrator; Dr. Uday Kumar, Medical Superintendent; Sr. Nancy Priya Mathias, CNO, Father Muller Medical College Hospital; and Rev. Sr Dhanya Devasia, Principal, Father Muller School and College of Nursing.

The gathering paid homage to the founders by garlanding the portraits of Rev. Fr Augustus Muller and Florence Nightingale, honoring their enduring legacy in healthcare and nursing. A highlight of the ceremony was the felicitation of veteran nurse Sr. Lucy Dsouza, recognized for her lifelong dedication and compassionate service. Her heartfelt message served as an inspiration to all, especially the younger generation of nurses.

Chief Guest Dr. Lulu Sheriff emphasized the pivotal role of nurses as the backbone of the healthcare system, particularly through their unwavering 24×7 commitment. She applauded the economic and social value of the nursing profession and encouraged continuous professional growth.

In his presidential address, Rev. Fr Richard Coelho further inspired the gathering by highlighting the dignity and grace that accompany selfless service.

The celebration included the presentation of awards for exemplary nursing service and academic achievements, as well as the honoring of nurses who completed 20 years of dedicated service. The prestigious Nightingale Award 2024 was presented to Ms. Prescilla Dsouza for her outstanding service.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and the singing of the institutional anthem. The formal programme was followed by a vibrant cultural session, marking a joyful close to a meaningful celebration. A celebratory lunch was served at the cafeteria for all nursing staff and invited guests.
