Father Muller’s send forth new graduates to the world
Mangaluru: The First ever graduation day of the Father Muller College of Allied Health Sciences (FMCOAHS), the new constituent college under the Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) and the 11th Father Muller College of Speech and Hearing (FMCOSH) was conducted on 18 August 2021. The venue being the Father Muller Convention centre was decked up with pageantry to greet the grandaunts numbering 155 who would be receiving their graduation certificates thus beginning their new journey in life.
The welcome address was delivered by Rev Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho, Director of FMCI, who eloquently welcomed the gathering reminding all of the history of the Institution and its stewardship in healthcare education. He also provided a brief profile of the chief guest who though hailing from Karkala has made name of himself in various allied health field and has been the director of the Padmashree group of Institutions since the past 25 years and syndicate member of the Rajiv Gandhi Health Sciences University.
The chief guest for the graduation ceremony was Professor Rajesh Shenoy, Director, Padmashree Group of Institutions, Bengaluru who emphasized the need for a uniform curriculum and strong forum for the Allied Health Subjects, currently which is being worked on by the state government. He applauded the students for choosing Father Muller which has projected them in the right trajectory with a efficient faculty and strong infrastructure. He essayed 3 important points that the graduates should remember; Alma mater, updation of knowledge and development of research acumen.
The graduation ceremony was presided over by the Bishop of Mangalore and the President of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, his Lordship Dr Peter Paul Saldanha who in his presidential address opined that the body though of many parts worked together in unison, so is an institution. Quoting St Irenaeus “The glory of God is the human person fully alive”; glory to god can be given by the living alone and the pandemic has taught us that God’s mercy is alive in his creation. The allied health workers were a part of the frontline during the pandemic and that no physician can carry out his work without the parallel help of the lab reports, radio reports and so forth. Blessing the graduates and their parents he wished them a new and happy journey in their lives.
The dean of the FMCOAHS Dr Antony Sylvan DSouza and the Principal of the FMCOSH Professor Akhilesh P.M. presented the reports of their colleges highlighting the achievements of the past year and the road map of the year ahead.
The graduation though pompous was kept with bare minimal crowd of only the graduates in the centre with no family or well-wishers the venue in light of the heightened COVID protocol as administered by the GoK. Live streaming of the event was carried on various channels and YouTube for the benefit of family and friends.
The graduates comprised of the students from M.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, Master of Physiotherapy, Masters in Hospital Administration, Bachelor of Physiotherapy, B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology, B.Sc. Medical Imaging Technology, B.Sc. Radiotherapy of FMCOAHS and Bachelor in Audiology Speech and Language Pathology of FMCOSH.
The honors given to the students of the FMCOAHS are as follows:
- Late Fr. Lawrence V. M. Fernandes memorial prize for securing highest marks (overall) in BPT. And
- Fr. Ignatius d’souza award for securing highest marks in physiotherapy subjects

Oath for the College of Allied Health Science graduates was administered by the Dean Dr Antony Sylvan DSouza and for the Physiotherapy graduates by Prof. Cherishma DSilva, Professor & HOD of Physiotherapy while for the graduates of the Speech and Hearing by Principal Dr Akhilesh P.M.. Invocation during the ceremony was rendered by the students of FMCOSH. Ms Keziah Pinto of the Physiotherapy gave the response of the graduates. Vote of thanks was delivered by Fr Nelson D. Pais. The programme was graced by the heads of departments and the dignitaries. The institutional anthem and the Indian National anthem were sung with reverence to the Alma Mater and the Motherland. Programme was perfected under the guidance of Rev Fr Ajith B Menezes, Administrator FMMC & FMCOAHS. The ceremony was compeered by Dr Sweta D’Cunha, Professor and Head Department of Hospital Management.
A ceremonial Thanksgiving Mass was held in the morning by the Director FMCI, thanking God for His abundance on the grandaunts and for blessing the Institution with grace to carry its mission of ‘Heal and Comfort’ for all humanity for many more years to come.
