February 1, 2025

Mangaluru: The School of Arts and Humanities, Department of Journalism and Visual Communication, in association with Karnataka Bank, organized Shooting Stars (SS) 2025, a national-level filmmaking competition and seminar at St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) campus, on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

The chief guest of the inaugural programme, Nagathahalli Chandrashekhar, Kannada director and screenwriter, inaugurated the event and said, “Cinema is a blend of arts, science, and commerce. Cinema becomes a product and an end stage. It is a thread of science, language, and literature. It is only when all come together that cinema is successful.”

“I believe a movie should not carry a message and become a tool of propaganda. It should entertain people and take them to the world of imagination. Movies should always build a critical sense and creative world,” he added.

President of the programme, Rev. Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Vice Chancellor, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), said, “In the recent world of mass media, three Cs are very important—Creativity, Confidence, and Collaboration. Creativity plays a vital role. Jesuit pedagogy also deals with it. Experiential knowledge is very important, along with reflection, action, and evaluation. A movie has that power, and collaborative efforts can bring change in today’s world.

The guest of honour, Dr Ronald Nazareth, Registrar, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), lauded the efforts of the department.

Interactive sessions by speakers Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar and Badekkila Pradeep, voice artists and actors, were organized along with an array of competitive events.

The event concluded with a valedictory programme for which the chief guest was ‘Daskath’ fame Deekshith K. Andinje, President, and the guests of the programme were Dr Charles V. Furtado and Dr Alwyn Dsa, respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Deekshith said, “The role of producer and director is as important as that of the actor. It’s a joyous moment to see a Tulu film like Daskath going pan-India. I thank the cinema lovers for making the movie a grand success and taking it to the 50th day.”

Dr Charles and Dr Alwyn wished all the success for Shooting Stars 2025 and congratulated the winners.

Alva’s College Moodabidiri emerged as winners of the event, and St Agnes College (Autonomous) bagged the runners-up.

Bhavya Shetty, HOD, Department of Journalism and Visual Communication; Prajath Kumar Hegde, staff convenor; student coordinators Anirudha Mannaje and Govind; and others were present.
