Children’s Chess Carnival held at Mount Carmel Central School by Derik’s Chess School
Mangaluru: Derik’s Chess School in association with Mount Carmel Central School, Mangaluru organized Children’s Chess Carnival at the school auditorium on Sunday, January 29, 2023. Around 350 students from different schools of D.K, Udupi and Bengaluru participated in the tournament.
The inaugural ceremony began with a prayer song invoking God’s blessings for the success of the tournament. Further, the audience were greeted with a scintillating welcome dance. The Chief guest Mr Walter Nandalike, Managing Director of Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd; Sr Carissima, the administrator of Mount Carmel Central School; Sr Melissa, the principal were escorted to the dais by Mr Derik, the Founder of Derik’s Chess School and Administrator Mr Prasanna Rao.
Mr Prasanna Rao extended a warm welcome to the dignitaries on the dais and welcomed the gathering. Illuminating the aura of the event, the chief guest Sri Walter Nandalike and other dignitaries inaugurated the tournament by lighting the Diya, followed by symbolic movements of the Chess coins on the Chess Board.
Mr Walter Nandalike, in his inaugural address appreciated the efforts of the parents for their unwavering support and advised the participants to make their parents proud. He also acknowledged his gratitude towards Mount Carmel Central School and Derik’s Chess School.
Further, Sr Carissima elucidated in her speech, that Chess is a journey of learning the beauty of life. She appreciated the efforts of Derik’s Chess School to improve the curiosity, imagination and concentration in students, and for helping them live their life to the fullest and serve the society.
Sr Melissa in her presidential address extended her appreciation to Derik’s Chess School for their contribution in training young minds. She also lauded the efforts of the parents for their constant support. In conclusion, she wished good luck to all the participants.
The Chief referee of the event, Mr Prasanna Rao presented the rules and guidelines of the tournament, kick-starting the matches. English lecturer Ms Ananya Sneha compeered the inaugural ceremony.
The best awaited moment for the valedictory where many contesters felt that they were placed in the centre of this chess carnival, awaiting for the final results to carry away the trophies and make their parents proud. All the participants had a smile on their face with increased self confidence mastering new skills and willing to accept the challenges. Surely all of them proved that playing is their fundamental right.
Mr V.P. Ashirvad, vice president of D.K Chess association along with the other dignitaries awarded the trophies and certificates to the participants who won the 1st five positions under each category separately for boys and girls in 5 categories, U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and U-15. The overall championship trophy was bagged by Lourdes Central School, Mangaluru while Mount Carmel Central School won the 1st runner up trophy and Sharada Vidyalaya, the 2nd runner up trophy.
Principal Sr Melissa thanked Mr Derik Pinto, founder of Derik’s Chess School; Mr Prasanna Rao, the administrator; the facultyof DCS and MCCS and the others who assisted in the smooth conduct of the Chess Carnival. Mr Derik too recognised the support given by the faculty of MCCS and handed over a memento to them. Teacher Leena Jose compeered the valedictory ceremony.
