Catholic Sabha President Alwyn D’Souza Leads Delegation Urging Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to Cancel SSLC Valuation During Holy Week
Mangaluru: The Catholic community across the globe observes the ongoing month as the Holy Month, a sacred tradition followed for over 2000 years. During this time, believers undertake 40 days of fasting, prayer, and penance in churches, leading up to significant days like Maundy Thursday, Good Friday (marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ), and Easter Sunday, which commemorates His resurrection.
However, this year, the schedule for the SSLC examination paper valuation—set to begin from March 15, 2025, for ten days—has caused distress among the Christian community. In regions like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, where a significant number of Christian teachers are involved in the valuation process, attending the assessment would hinder their participation in these deeply religious observances.

To address this concern, a delegation led by Mr. Alwyn D’Souza, President of Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh (R), met the Honorable District In-Charge and Health Minister, Mr. Dinesh Gundu Rao. They requested that Christian teachers be granted leave during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday so they can meaningfully observe their religious duties.
Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao responded promptly and positively. He immediately contacted the Board Director in Bengaluru and conveyed the appeal. After discussions with DDPI and senior officials, assurance was given that leave would be granted to Christian teachers on these key holy days.
The Catholic Sabha expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Minister for his understanding and swift action. The delegation included Mr. Alwyn D’Souza (President), former president Mr. Paul Rolfie D’Costa, Mr. Santosh D’Souza (President, Pezarr Zone), Mr. Arun D’Souza (President, City Zone), and Mr. Alwyn Montero (Central General Secretary).
