Acclaimed Teacher, Entrepreneur Benjamin D’Souza passes away at 75
Mangaluru: Renowned Teacher and Entrepreneur from Kelarai, Mangaluru Benjamin D’Souza passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, after a brief illness. He was 75. Benjamin did his schooling at St Joachim School in Kelarai and did his studies from high school to his degree at St Aloysius College Mangalore. He obtained a Master’s degree in political Science from Venkateswara University, Thirupathi, and a B.Ed. from Government College Mangaluru. He started his teaching career at Rosario Institutions Mangaluru and taught in various schools in Puttur, Milagres, and Udupi.
He began his entrepreneurial journey, served as the secretary of the Bus Owners Association, and was the chairman of the Lions Club Dakshina Kannada district. He was a member of the Land Tribunal and a member of the Bajpe Mandal Panchayath.
He served for three terms as a member of the diocesan pastoral council and served as vice president of the parish council as well. He was extremely good at singing and sports and always encouraged the youth to take part in cultural and sports events. He was a toastmaster and emceed several events in and around Mangalore. He was the first ever life member of the Catholic Sabha of Mangalore Pradesh.
He left behind wife Violet Dsouza (Retd Associate Professor Govinda Das College, Surthakal), daughter Nirmala Dsouza (Senior Manager, HDFC Bank), and two sons. Benjohn Dsouza, Chief Engineer, is currently working in Mexico. Benoy Dsouza and son-in-law Roshan Castelino, former Manager of the State Bank of India, Shivbagh, and granddaughter Rachel Pia.
