Pope Francis has appointed Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado at present the Bishop of Belgaum, as the new Archbishop of Bangalore. This announcement was made public from Rome on 19th March 2018, the Feast day of St Joseph.
Archbishop Dr Bernard Moras’s resignation was accepted by Pope Francis and Archbishop Moras will remain as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the canonical taking possession of the new Archbishop.
About Bishop Peter Machado:
Bishop Peter Machado was born on May 26, 1954, in Honnavar, which was a part Belgaum diocese then. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1978, for the diocese of Karwar, which had been created as a separate diocese from Belgaum two years earlier.
He was appointed as the Bishop of Belgaum on February 2nd 2006 and was consecrated bishop on March 30th the same year. He chose his episcopal motto as “DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU”. Prior to his appointment as a bishop, he has completed doctoral studies in Rome in Canon Law and served as procurator, judicial vicar, consulter and secretary of the Karnataka Regional Bishops' Laity Commission for 10 years.
