St Philomena College Observes ‘World Environment Day’ with Awareness Rally and Green Initiatives

Puttur, 6 June 2025: St Philomena College (Autonomous), Puttur, joined the global community in celebrating World Environment Day 2025 with a series of awareness activities and green initiatives. The event was collaboratively organized by the Departments of Botany and Zoology, along with the college Eco Club.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr Wilfred Rodrigues, Assistant Director of the Taluk Panchayat, Puttur, drew attention to the growing threat of plastic pollution, particularly the improper disposal of non-biodegradable waste such as baby diapers in rural areas. He urged students to take active responsibility for protecting the environment through mindful and sustainable daily practices.

The program was presided over by Rev. Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro, Principal of the College, who in his presidential address emphasized the need to cultivate environmental consciousness among youth. He advocated for consistent, small steps towards a more sustainable lifestyle.

Mrs Shashiprabha B. from the Department of Botany, in her introductory remarks, appealed to students to become agents of change by eliminating the use of unnecessary plastics in their day-to-day lives.

The formal program was compered by Ria D’Souza of III B.Sc., while Yajnesh of II B.Sc. proposed the vote of thanks.

Following the indoor session, students participated in an environmental awareness rally, holding placards and banners to promote ecological responsibility. As a symbolic gesture of commitment to a greener future, saplings were planted on the college campus.
