St Aloysius (Deemed to be University) Receives Bar Council of India Approval to Launch School of Law

May 15, 2025

Mangaluru, May 15, 2025: St Aloysius (Deemed to be University), a premier Jesuit institution with a rich 145-year legacy in education, has achieved a significant milestone with the formal approval from the Bar Council of India (BCI) to launch its School of Law. This development marks a transformative chapter in the University’s journey of academic excellence and service to the nation.

The BCI has granted approval under Section 7(1)(i) of the Advocates Act, 1961, authorizing the University to confer degrees in law. Beginning from the academic year 2025–26, the School of Law will offer two prestigious programs:

Three-Year LLB (Honours) – Intake: 60 students

Five-Year Integrated BBA LLB (Honours) – Intake: 60 students

These programs, sanctioned for the academic years 2025–26 and 2026–27, comply fully with the Rules of Legal Education, 2008 and the regulatory framework set by the BCI, ensuring students receive a world-class legal education.

Rev. Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Vice Chancellor of the University, emphasized that the School of Law is not merely an academic initiative, but a mission-driven pursuit to form legal professionals committed to justice, equity, and service to society. “We aim to create a sanctuary where wisdom meets character, where every judgment and courtroom plea is inspired by the Aloysian values of integrity and compassion,” he said.

To support this vision, the University has developed a state-of-the-art infrastructure for holistic legal education. A well-equipped law library with resources worth over ₹33 lakh offers access to leading legal research databases such as SCC Online, Manupatra, and Knimbus eLibrary. A climate-controlled Moot Court Room, designed with modern interiors and lighting, offers students a platform to simulate real courtroom scenarios and develop advocacy skills.

Experiential learning is a core focus at the School of Law, with opportunities for legal aid clinics, internships at courts and law firms, and hands-on training with NGOs and policy think tanks. Regular moot court competitions, case study discussions, debates, and group interactions prepare students with critical legal reasoning and communication skills.

Additionally, the University’s commitment to cura personalis—care for the whole person—ensures a nurturing academic environment. Students benefit from mentorship programs, wellness support, dynamic faculty development, and a proactive placement cell that facilitates diverse career pathways in litigation, corporate law, judiciary, public interest, and international legal practice.

Law students also have access to world-class facilities including smart classrooms, the central library, high-speed internet, residential hostels, and sports amenities. Active student societies and editorial boards further enrich their academic and leadership experience.
