SAC holds ‘Socius 2023’
Mangaluru: The department of sociology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, organised the second edition of the sociology fest, “Socius 2023- Imperfectly Perfect: – accepting it” on August 23rd in L.F. Radquinha Hall of LCRI Block.
Mr Jeeth Milan Roche, an Entrepreneur and environmentalist, was the chief guest. Dr Falguni Vasavada, Professor of Marketing and Co-chair, MDP at MICA, was the resource person and Dr Alwyn D’Sa, Registrar of the College, presided over the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Jeeth Milan Roche said, “Humans are insane species living on earth. It is very important for the present generation to preserve biodiversity. The actual fact is that the earth is covered by only 3% of forest. Hence, saving 3% of the greenery is the duty of every person. It is the responsibility of every parent not only to invest in their children’s education but also in nature as well.”
Dr Alwyn D’Sa in his presidential remarks, said, “Perfection is the enemy of excellence. Society and individuals always have high expectations. Believing in stereotypes, we always tend to wire ourselves for perfection. Hence, this fest will pave the way for breaking all those myths and also trigger more ideas that empower society.”
Dr Falguni Vasavada enlightened the students with her words of wisdom. She said, “Perfection comes from stereotypes and biases, patriarchal society, popular culture, gender roles and generational trauma. In order to break these stigmas and stereotypes, unlearning certain things is more important than learning and that shows the true mark of education.” She further explained how women are portrayed in advertisements and how advertisements play a significant role in imparting the value of imperfections. She also said, “Everything looks good, when you start feeling good in yourself. In the imperfectly perfect world, one should adopt certain notions as to self-loving and unlearning things, to break the biases and other gender stereotypes.”
During the programme, Dr Falguni Vasavada was felicitated by the dignitaries.
The Dean of Arts, Dr Rose Veera DSouza, assistant professor and HOD of Sociology, Ms Joan Rita O’Brien, and student coordinators Akinesh and Aathish were present on the dais. The formal function was then followed by various cultural events and competitions. Joan Rita O’Brien welcomed the gathering and briefed them about the programme. Niranjana compered the programme. Savitha D’Souza, assistant professor, Department of Sociology, proposed the vote of thanks.
