OLYMPUS Laparoscopy System for OBGyn at Father Muller

May 28, 2025

Mangaluru: The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has added a state-of-the-art laparoscopic surgical system—OLYMPUS—to its arsenal of advanced medical technology. This latest innovation marks a significant leap forward in patient care, offering gynaecologists superior visualization, improved precision, and enhanced safety, ultimately ensuring better outcomes for patients.

The OLYMPUS Laparoscopic System was unveiled and blessed by Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho on 27th May 2025 at the Labour Theatre Complex, in the presence of the Management Committee members, faculty of OBG and Anaesthesia, and the Labour OT staff.

Dr Deepa Kanagal, Head of the Department of OBG, highlighted the significance of acquiring this advanced system, which is the newest of its kind in the city. She emphasized that the multi-component system enhances surgical techniques and represents a technological upgrade for the department.

The Department of OBG at Father Muller Medical College is highly skilled in laparoscopy and regularly performs a wide range of laparoscopic procedures—from basic salpingectomies for ectopic pregnancies, ovarian cystectomies, and total laparoscopic hysterectomies (TLH), to complex endometriotic surgeries and TLH for patients with previous surgical histories. The department proudly performs the highest number of laparoscopic surgeries among medical colleges in the city.

Components of the System:

1. VISERA ELITE III – Olympus

The VISERA ELITE III is Olympus’ latest surgical imaging platform, combining 4K Ultra High Definition, Infrared Imaging, and Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) in a compact and integrated system. It is designed to support multiple specialties including general surgery, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and oncological procedures.

Key Highlights:

  • Upgradable to Infrared (IR) Imaging – Enables visualization beyond visible light, helping identify lymph nodes, tumors, or bile ducts with enhanced accuracy.
  • Continuous Auto Focus – Provides real-time, sharp imaging, reducing delays and improving precision.
  • Picture-in-Picture Mode – Allows simultaneous viewing of normal and infrared images for safer dissection.
  • Overlay Image – Enhances anatomical orientation for safer tumor excision.
  • Yellow Enhancement Mode – Differentiates fat and organ tissues, aiding in preservation of vital structures.
  • 3D Imaging Ready – Enhances depth perception for complex laparoscopic procedures.
  • AI & Molecular Technology Ready – Prepared for future predictive analysis and real-time support.
  • Autoclavable Camera Head – Improves infection control and patient safety.
  • Wide Compatibility – Works with various endoscopes for expanded capabilities.
  • Integrated NBI – Supports early detection of abnormal or cancerous tissues.
  • Still Image Capture – Facilitates documentation and patient follow-up.

Patient Benefits:

  • Minimally invasive procedures with faster recovery, less pain, and minimal scarring.
  • Enhanced imaging for early disease detection and complete tumor removal.
  • Reduced surgical time and blood loss.
  • Shorter hospital stays, contributing to cost efficiency and faster return to daily activities.

2. LMD-X3200MD – Sony Medical Display

The Sony LMD-X3200MD is a 55-inch, 3D, 4K UHD medical-grade monitor that delivers superior image clarity. It complements the Olympus platform, ensuring that even the finest anatomical details are visible during surgery. This advanced monitor is the latest of its kind in Mangaluru.

Patient Benefits:

  • Enables precise incisions and targeted interventions.
  • Enhances surgical outcomes and success rates.
  • Improves patient safety.
  • Promotes faster healing and recovery.

3. Olympus Infrared Telescopes

These specialized telescopes facilitate fluorescence-guided imaging, aiding in the visualization of blood vessels, bile ducts, and tumor margins.

Patient Benefits:

  • Reduces the risk of damage to vital structures.
  • Ensures complete excision of tumors or lymph nodes, lowering recurrence rates.

4. Olympus UHI-4 (Ultra High Flow Insufflator)

The UHI-4 ensures stable, high-speed insufflation to maintain a consistent operating field during laparoscopic surgery.

Patient Benefits:

  • Provides optimal visibility for safe and efficient surgery.
  • Contributes to shorter operating times, reduced anaesthesia exposure, and quicker recovery.

This remarkable technological upgrade is in line with Father Muller Medical College Hospital’s mission to “Heal and Comfort” through advanced, patient-centric care. These new systems not only empower gynaecologists with the latest tools but, more importantly, ensure safer, faster, and more effective treatment—aligned with the latest medical advancements.
