Mangaluru: CODP conducts Cancer Awareness Program at Shree Bharathi Institution, Mangaluru
Mangaluru: An awareness program on ‘SPARSHA – Campaign against Cancer’ was conducted at Shree Bharathi College by CODP® Mangaluru and Caritas India, New Delhi in collaboration with Indian Cancer Society. The main objective of ‘SPARSHA’ is to spread awareness regarding Cancer in the society.
The program commenced with a prayer song by students of the College. Thereafter, Mr Ashok the faculty of Shree Bharathi Institution welcomed the gathering.
Dr Chethana K, a Community Medicine Specialist from A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre, Mangaluru explained that according to World Cancer Statistics 2018 the top three cancers in males are lung, prostate and colorectal cancers which average to 44.4% of all cancers and in females cancer of the breast, colorectal and lung average to 43.9% of all cancers. The cancer risk factors are alcohol, smoking, drugs, spicy food, junk food and family history. She also highlighted that tobacco contains 4000 chemicals that are injurious to health. She concluded her awareness session by giving suggestion on healthy life style such as reduce phone usage to avoid radiation, avoid junk food, practice healthy diet and exercise, avoid consuming drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
133 students actively participated, especially during the question-answer session.
The program ended with vote of thanks by Ms.Nafisaka Lyngdoh, MSW student of St.Aloysius College. The Principal of Shree Bharati College Mr Jeevandas presented mementos to Dr.Chethana K. and Ms Shilpa DSouza.
