Mangaluru: Awareness on CANCER imparted to members of Mahasanghas

Mangaluru: Sparsha – an awareness program on cancer was held for self-help groups – Kamadhenu and Kalpavraksha at Padua on the occasion of Christmas and New Year celebration on January 5th. 


After the prayer song MsArathi welcomed the gathering. Fr Oswald Monteiro, Director of CODP inaugurated the program. Fr Xavier Gomes gave a message to the participants on the significance of Christmas and New year. 

Awareness session was taken by Dr R. Shreyas, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Radiotherapy and Oncology, KMC Hospital Mangaluru. He explained the different types of Cancer and the various sources from which Cancer can be acquired. He also stated the risk factor summary i.e. how cancer can be caused due to cigarette smoking and occupational hazards. Symptoms of Cancer was show to the participants through PPT presentation. Statistical data of the types of Cancer in D.K district was also included in the presentation. He said avoiding junk food and practicing healthy diet is much important in our daily routine. 


He concluded his Talk by giving an important message to the participants by telling Cancer can be treated if detected at an early stage. He also shared information on several Cancer survivors who have lived for 20 years and even more by taking regular treatment and timely follow-up. 
Participants actively involved in the session by clarifying their

doubts on Cancer, and were also interested in conducting such talks in their community. 


Total participants present for the program were 105. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms Gayathri. 


The programme was continued by New Year celebration organized by Kalpavraksha and Kamadhenu Mahasanghas.
