Annular Solar Eclipse observed at St Philomena College
Puttur: St Philomena Amateur Astronomers Club (SPAAC) had made necessary arrangements for direct observation of Annular Solar Eclipse through telescope fitted with filters on December 26, 2019 from 8am onwards for the students, teachers and the interested general public on the PG gallery of St Philomena College Puttur.
An annual solar eclipse (ring of fire) occurs when the angular diameter of the Moon falls short of that of the Sun, so that it cannot cover up the latter completely. As a result a ring of the Sun’s disk remains visible around the Moon.
As the Eclipsed Sun should not be viewed with the naked eye SPAAC arranged safe techniques to observe the eclipse. It included telescope fitted with filters, Pin Hole Camera, Solar Filter Goggles etc. This rare situation was viewed by more than 500 people from various sections of the society with great enthusiasm.
